Thoughts:
My thoughts are basically just going to be a word vomit of all the things I loved about this book. Wow, what a rollercoaster! Great for fans of kdramas or any drama to be honest. There was the perfect balance of danger, and emotion, and isolation, and reaching out, and family, and love, and betrayal, and so so so many FEELS. I loved every bit of emotion that this story made you feel and experience right alongside Miyoung.
I really enjoyed the whole plot and romantic subplot. Miyoung has a problem she needs to figure out and she doesn’t know who to turn to and you as the reader don’t know who to trust and don’t know who she should go to for help either, so you’re just as lost as Miyoung and thus rooting for her to make the right choices. Then choices lead to consequences, and consequences can lead to betrayals, and then action to reaction and... PHEW what a whirlwind. The romantic plot didn’t get in the way of the major plot at all, and in fact I think it really elevated it. The addition of romance added to the high stakes and Miyoung and Jihoon’s relationship felt so real the whole time. I was shipping them from page one obviously.
The world building was just the right amount. You felt plopped in Seoul (not that I’ve been there, but still). Lots of Korean culture, there were additions of Korean language (but not too much that the average person couldn’t figure out what was being said) and lots of Korean food! You could almost smell the story being told with all the street food vendors and restaurants. And you never felt like you were lost when it came to the legends that the fantasy in the story was based on. They were told in a non-info dumpy way that kept you rapt.
The ending I wasn’t expecting! There were no punches held here. Then right at the very very end you’re whole expectation of how the story would finally come to a close is turned UPSIDE DOWN. And now it’s a LONG WAIT until the next and final book. I’m so excited to continue on with the duology.
