The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang

5 stars, no doubt in my mind.

I really really loved this book. there were so many jaw-dropping moments, heart-wrenching moments, squeeze your heart and shred it to pieces moments. R. F. Kuang really knows how to make you work for those small victories and big victories while reading her book. The plot had a lot of highs and lows, making the pacing perfect for the story. There are multiple climaxes throughout the different phases of the plot, each of these challenges really showed the growth of the main character Rin. I LOVED Rin as a main character. She's no where near your perfect hero and she even has a sort of villainous vibe about her, but you root for her no matter what. You can see her growth throughout the story, she gains strength and capability through so many different trials and losses. I even loved all the side characters even the ones that were meant to be annoying because they added such a richness to the story. Then the ending happens and you just go -- WTF. I was STUNNED by the entire book. I couldn't predict a single thing. Drank up every single moment. Literally cannot wait to pick up The Dragon Republic.
