3.5 stars! Spoiler free review! ARC provided by the publisher.
Who else was extra excited when Victoria Aveyard announced she was releasing a new novel?! Me! I was part of the “I enjoyed the Red Queen series because I didn’t have these ridiculous high expectations for it” group and I enjoy her writing style, so I went into Realm Breaker expecting to love it.
And I did, for the most part. I actually really liked this story and would give it 3.5 stars, here’s why:
It’s a good first in a series, but fell victim to the “this is a grand world and there’s many characters and there’s a lot to explain” issue with first books in that it had a lot of ground work to lay down that some who don’t want to wade through all those details may find turn away from
This “rag tag” group is meant to be made up of all the side characters who didn’t win glory or die in the major battles, the characters you’re supposed to forget about -- BUT they each have a purpose and back stories and I really enjoyed getting to know them all, and I hope to get to know them more as right now they don't seem fully fully fleshed out quite yet.
There’s not quite a romance in book one, but you can get an idea of what’s going to be brewing in the books to come.
The world is vast and extensive, thank Gods for the map that comes with this book because I needed it.
The magic system is still quite nebulous to me at this point, there’s so much that’s yet to be explained and explored
The banter! The banter may be one of my favorite things because I found myself actually laughing out loud a few times. Also sometimes just the joking jabs they make towards each other are hilarious.
Excited for the sequel! Will MOST DEFINITELY have to reread this first book before beginning the next just to relearn everyone’s names and re-experience their journey with new eyes, cause I know I’ve already forgotten some important details.
