Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer

2 stars. Generously given because nostalgia factor, but this review is probably considered spoilery, but if you've read Twilight -- then you're fine.

So Midnight Sun has been finally released and younger Dorothy would have never taken THIS long to finally read it, but here we are… Many years later and now having a good understanding what a normal romantic relationship should be and what is NOT creepy. STILL, I gave this book a shot and with very very very low expectations, rather enjoyed the throw back to this era of my life while also rightfully getting mad at Edward for things he shouldn’t be doing.

Here are my thoughts:

  • Stephanie Meyer’s writing style is actually quite palatable. I feel like reading her stories are very easy to consume / follow because the writing isn’t flowery at all

  • Edward’s mind was entertaining whenever he was with his family or peeping in on other students thoughts of Bella; however -- still entirely creepy when it comes to watching Bella sleep

    • SUCH a CREEP. And he knows it. Doesn't try to change it... Literally an obsessive stalker and ADMITS IT. Gross!!

    • When he wasn't being creepy, his thoughts were rather selfish and/or repetitive (see my random thoughts while reading below!)

  • Bella from Edward’s point of view was even more ridiculous

    • She is just so obsessed with him that her actions make no sense.

    • The normal human would have very different reactions to a lot of things that happen in this book.

    • WE GET IT. She's pale and sickly looking. Which Edward apparently finds attractive??

  • Entertaining? Yes, 3/5 stars for this because I had no troubles finishing it

  • Nostalgia? Yep yep yep 5/5

  • Writing? 3/5 straight forward train of thoughts, no flowery writing, good pacing between time with Bella and time in his own mind

  • Story? 1/5 still superrrrr weird

There really no need to read this if you weren’t a part of the Twilight fandom years and years ago. It’s all for the nostalgia.

Random thoughts while reading:

  • Here we go again with the thinking everything's for you or about you [Edward]. I know it's supposed to be part of the character development/plot that he's now thinking this woman is actually in love with him because she's doing things for him. But one thing women don't ever do for men is look nice [Bella had gotten dressed differently, but not necessarily for Edward, at least I hope], we look nice for ourselves.

  • Okay okay okay. We get it!! He's struggling to think through staying with Bella vs. leaving and going far far away. You don't need to keep repeating it with every single thought that Edward keeps having.

  • I don't understand how I truly despise Edward, but still really enjoying the story... How is it at no point did Edward not just think Bella is a fxcking idiot.

  • Bella is literally Hei Hei the Rooster from Moana. Constantly trying to put herself in danger and not realizing she's doing it
