2 stars, DNF at 71%. This review will be spoiler free.
Synopsis:
“Arrah is a young woman from a long line of the most powerful witch doctors in the land. But she fails at magic, fails to call upon the ancestors and can't even cast the simplest curse. Shame and disappointment dog her.
When strange premonitions befall her family and children in the kingdom begin to disappear, Arrah undergoes the dangerous and scorned process of selling years of her life for magic. This borrowed power reveals a nightmarish betrayal and a danger beyond what she could have imagined. Now Arrah must find a way to master magic, or at least buy it, in order to save herself and everything she holds dear.”
Thoughts:
So 2 stars… I DNF’d this book at page 344, which is roughly 71%. I'm was just really really bored. I truly enjoyed the first half, which is why I'm leaving the 2 stars. It was going good, I was rapt. But something about this middle section just had me losing all interest. It dragged out. I began not actually enjoying Arrah as a character or any of the side characters at this point. I really didn’t want to continue even though I only had a hundred or so pages left.
I SO SO SO wanted to love this book too. Maybe it was when I was reading it that made me feel this way, I do know my current moods affect my feelings about what I’m reading. Maybe I’ll come back to it?
Overall:
If anyone has finished this book and experienced a similar "middle-of-the-book slump," but finished and thought it was worth it. Please tell me! That would convince me to finish. But for now, I'm gonna set this aside.
