Rebecca Roanhorse may become one of my favorite authors. I really enjoyed this book and it's really propelled me to want to read more adult fantasy books.
The characters fall right into your heart. You have a badass pirate/siren captain, Xiala, who knows exactly who she is and does not apologize for it. Complementary to her bold personality is Serapio, who is a quiet darkness that makes you wait for his true lethality to show. And across the sea, there’s Narampa, someone who manages to be religious, relatable, soft yet strong, and oh so pure.
The world is rich with unique civilizations with their own kinds of magic and history. You can really picture everything around you whether it’s being on the ship attacked by hundreds of bird or in the Holy City travelling treacherous landscapes.
And to top it all off the writing is beautiful. Roanhorse weaves an intricate story that, though it has its slow moments, culminates into a climax and cliffhanger that makes me want to read the sequel ASAP. I brought down just a half start for the slowness, but to be honest, there was a lot of foundational information to be taught throughout the book so it’s not surprising.
Other pros are, this book has openly queer characters and uses non-binary pronouns throughout the story.
Highly recommend for fantasy lovers like myself. Can’t wait for the sequel!
