4.75 stars! This review will contain no spoilers for Firewalker, but if you there will be spoilers for Trial by Fire!
Summary:
Firewalker is the second book in the Worldwalker trilogy by Josephine Angelini. Right at the end of Trial by Fire, both Lily and Rowan have been transported back into Lily’s universe. Firewalker picks up right at the end of Trial by Fire with Lily burnt to a crisp and on the brink of death. In this state, she is able to world walk much more easily putting her mind at the mercy of Lillian. Lillian is not ready for Lily to be gone from her New Salem. She sends Lily memories of what happened to her that made her change into the villain she is now. Lillian demands that Lily understands how even though she seems to be the ruthless and heartless one, she is justified in her choices. And if Lily refuses to return to New Salem, Lillian is willing to do whatever it takes to make her even if that involves more death.
Thoughts:
I immediately added this to my favorites shelf on GoodReads after finishing because PHEW that was one heck of an adventure. I seriously love Angelini's writing. It goes by super fast, events zoom by back to back to back. Any moment you think your heart has to rest is one big NOPE and onto the next suspenseful ride. Granted, the beginning of the book took some time to pick up and some things may have played out a little too nicely or clicked a little too quickly, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of the book. I have so much love for the weirdly named characters in this series too. Breakfast and Una just about make the funniest shipping names. There's Lily who has such a clear head on her shoulders. She may be Lillian, but how she handles her troubles sets her apart completely. And the trials that happen in this book definitely separates the strong from the weak and I can say that my main ships in this book got all jumbled around by the ending. OH, the ending. I kept saying to myself "How could you do this Josephine Angelini?! How?!" when I turned to the last page because it took ONE sentence for her to completely break my heart in the last chapter. I enjoyed this book even more so than the first, no second book slump at all! I have fallen in love with this witchy read and cannot wait to get my hands on the last book!
Plot:
This book was kinda slow to start, but I totally understand why. Rowan needed to experience a bit of Lily’s world and Lily had many many things to explain to not just her family, but her friends. I knew that they were going to find out about her magic, it was inevitable despite her judgement that they should not get involved. I thought that when they found out, they kinda just accepted it which was a little weird for me because I was expected more fight, but I don’t mind. Everything from that moment on was suspenseful right up to the end. The fast-paced events barely give any breaks for you to take a deep breath of relief. What can you expect in a world infested with Woven and a queen breathing down your neck.
I’m so happy that right in the beginning of this book we get to figure out (sorta) about why Lillian turned out to be the ruthless ruler that she is. I’ve been dying to know and when I finally found out, I understood.
The romance in this book had some twists and turns too, but I can’t say too much without getting angry. I can only hope that things get solved in a way that makes sense in the next book because I almost have no ships in this trilogy right now except for Breakfast and Una.
The rest of this book is very much about survival. Not just Lily and her coven, but everyone in Lillian’s Salem. Lily spends a lot of the time questioning herself and everyone around her and especially the Woven. I like the mystery aspect of this book. There’s this huge problem that Lily herself has to solve and time is running low.
Then the ending comes in with the OMG CLIFFHANGER to top everything off. Was literally screaming at my book WHY, HOW, so serious. I needed the last book like yesterday.
Characters:
Lily is my dearheart in this trilogy. I love how she can be so freakin’ understanding of ALL sides. All of them. And she is the only one willing to do what is necessary to save the most without using means that will kill many. (This may only make sense when you actually read Firewalker)
Rowan in this book was not my fave. He was kinda shady in the beginning though I could totally sense where his mind was even if Lily couldn’t. Then as the book progressed, my feelings about him fluctuated which is totally opposite from how I felt about him in book one where I was basically in love with him.
Lily’s Tristan was someone I don’t think I liked too much in book one, but then again we barely saw anything of him. We got all Rowan and New Salem Tristan. In this book however, we get to see much more of his real personality, his vulnerability, his LOVE for Lily and it’s beautiful even if Lily is in love with Rowan.
Breakfast and Una are my OTP in this book. They have to survive and stay together by whatever means in this trilogy or I may just stop reading. Just kidding I won’t, but I’ll be really sad. I mean Breakfast, his name is freakin’ Breakfast and he’s so adorable. And Una is so badass.
Overall:
Need need need the third book now! And I already know it’s not on Audible so I couldn’t start it right away. Hopefully I can get my hands on it soon as should YOU! Book one was good, but book two was amazing! Give it a chance and you’ll be blown away!
Thanks for reading! :)
