The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

3.5 stars! Spoiler free review!

A wonderfully heart warming romance between an autistic man who unknowingly (and frustratingly) falls in love with a polar-opposite woman who was thrust into his life by his mother.

  • The premise of this story is funny and cute and the movie ready! Khai’s mother is visiting Vietnam to bring home a wife for her son, and they make a deal that this will be the last time. Khai thinks he just has to avoid her, last out the summer, and she will be gone from his life, but he’s in for a whirlwind romance.

  • Esme, a mixed Asian-white girl, lives for her daughter and will do anything for her. When the opportunity to meet a potential husband in America arises, she thinks of the changes it will bring to her and her daughter’s life and takes it. However, Khai isn’t exactly an easy man to seduce.

  • These characters were so much fun to watch come together in this romance. Khai thinks he has no emotions, his autism really just has him process emotions differently, and he slowly comes out of his shell throughout the book because of Esme. Esme is made of some strong stuff, she works, she’s dutiful, she’s detail-oriented, and she’s loyal to her family. All of which make her the perfect pair for Khai, but he just needs to see it first!

  • Side subplots make the story even better and Esme tries to figure out more about her American side and Khai is helping her.

  • And then the ending, oh so CUTE by the end, but oh so frustrating TOO. My heart was aching trying to scream at Khai to see reason, but thank goodness for Quan because he added a nice twist of comedy for the finale and the push Khai needed.

  • REP REP REP :)

    • Neurodivergent representation in all the Kiss Quotient books: autism!

    • Asian representation in all the Kiss Quotient books, too!

Overall, the last book I read in the Kiss Quotient collection (second published), and another hit for me! I liked all the books in the trilogy, Kiss Quotient still being my fave, and recommend them all!
