Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

Review by Dorothy Requina

Sad to say this was 2 stars for me. Spoiler free review!

I'm disappointed that I didn't also completely fall in love with this Brown Sisters book, but it just didn't make me feel the feels the way the Chloe's and Eve's books did. This is actually the only Brown Sister's book I didn’t give 5 stars.

Here’s what I liked:

  • Wonderfully diverse cast of characters in terms of race and neurodivergence and trauma history

  • Zafir as person, he's just an adorable, giant that listens to romance audiobooks and loves teaching kids about their feelings and their love of sports

  • Loved Dani's sureness about her sexuality and prowess and intelligence

  • ...And that's about it.

What I didn't like and why it dropped to 2 stars:

  • I really wasn't into the love story. They didn't have the spark or the angst that flowed genuinely from the other couples in the other books.

  • I really just had a "Oh ok, that's cool" kinda feeling about everything, no true investment in the main love birds, their brewing romance, or their lives outside of each other

  • I couldn’t relate to Dani’s feelings, her refusal to acknowledge his feelings and love came off as annoying to me instead of what the author probably meant -- trauma-related unacceptance of reciprocated emotions.

  • The conflict that causes the Zafir and Dani to be apart is related to the above point, and because it didn't feel like a true conflict to me it seemed to be done and over with really fast and really simply. Further making me feel like I had no emotional connection to root for them.

Overall, it wasn't a bad read, not even a boring read to me. Just like an average romance with no particularly crazy plot or anything. There are cool aspects about this book, but the things that are supposed to be the main selling points are the things that didn't sell well to me.
