Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (Part II)

Discussion by Dorothy Requina

For a quick summary of the book and why you should read Fangirl (no spoilers!) see part one!

*THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS* Go away if you have no read the book!

Plot from SPRING SEMESTER, 2012:

Levi has redeemed himself to me. Hearing what he was truly thinking when he was confronted by Cath and the hospital and what he was thinking when he decided to kiss that girl made lots of things make more sense. Of course, I agree with Cath, we cannot just go straight into trusting him again. Baby steps.

As they keep dating I just can’t help but be like “Gods I wish my relationship was as cute as this…” Levi is just so sweet to her. And the argument they had over the dirty laundry basket was just so cute. When they were driving home to Omaha to visit Cath’s dad I thought Cath was being such a tease! Kissing his knuckles and his hand and then his cheek then shooting over to hug him. And he just seemed confused by all the PDA that I was like, oh no.. Where is this going.. But it didn’t go anywhere.

When they got to Cath’s house and Levi met her dad I think making Levi actually nervous was a good move. Made him much more realistic because who meets their girlfriends parents and isn’t nervous in real life.

Tons of drama started coming into the story afterwards. Wren is hospitalized and is acting like a total brat about it. Laura, their mom, is a spineless dweeb in my opinion. She couldn’t even handle a small rebellion from a daughter who had a total right to be a bitch to her. Her dad explodes over the alcohol intoxication and Wren is almost made to move back home.. Woah. Lots of drama back to back to back, but what was cute was when Levis showed up. I swear that boy is willing to drive any amount of hours or miles just to make sure she’s okay.

Can I just mention one more time that Levi is just so adorable. When he calls Cath sweetheart it made my heart melt. And even though he comes off as super secure, he still has moments where he’s unsure of himself like when he wasn’t sure why Wren didn’t like him. Of course that wasn’t the case, but he showed a vulnerability.

Cath and Levi’s touchy touchy scenes were TOO MUCH FOR MY HEART. I couldn’t tell if I wanted it to stay innocent or keep going… I kept getting confused in a lot of places because my mind couldn’t create the right pictures in my head, but I got the gist. I was screaming in my room every time a moment like this surfaced.

OMG the part where Nick totally got what he deserved for cheating Cath on that story. He lost his teaching assistant position. He can’t get recognized without Cath as a coauthor. Since she doesn’t want to he doesn’t get anything and serves him RIGHT. How dare he use my poor little Cath. How rude of him. This justice was like a hot white chocolate mocha from Starbucks.

Now.. The argument between Cath and Levi, though short, made me freak the f*** out. I was like “No babies! Don’t fight!” and then when she was crying I was thinking Levi was going to use his emergency key to get back in and apologize, but he didn’t. She walked out and bam there he was on the floor. I thought how perfect that moment was, that his actions are so consistent throughout the book (not going in unless Cath wanted him to) and them making up that way was perfection.

So she finished her short story and Carry On, but its never outright said.. And then they get the eighth book to Simon Snow and then she’s reading it to Levi and then it ends. WHAT.. WHAT….. I definitely thought there would be more. It was so abrupt. If I have any complaints, that is one of them. The book ended too abruptly for my tastes, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like how she use Cath reading to Levi as the last scene. That was cute.

Ugh, I used cute so many times in this, but there’s just no other word to describe my feels right now. Everything was just so cute.

Characters:

Cath: Gosh, I love how she thinks. She’s crazy. She’s weird. She’s smart. I feel like I am her. I said this before and I’ll say it again. Cath is the most relatable protagonist I have ever had the chance of reading.

Levi: Again, I still love Levi. He was just so adorable when he was like “Are you [Cath] rooting for me? to make sure his attempts at a second chance weren’t futile. And he’s being super understanding of Cath’s craziness. Levi is caring and chivalrous and so friggin’ cutesy.

Reagan: Yes, reagan. You go and set those ground rules. I really enjoy how Reagan is just so blunt and straight forward and everything out in the open. You don’t meet many people like that and it is refreshing.

Wren: I am so happy that Wren and Cath made up in the end. Seeing the twin interactions was like a view into how they used to be and Wren ended up becoming a huge supporter of Cath’s Carry On. It was a lovely make up between sisters.
